Our Goals:
❖ To improve the quality of the Cedar High Track Program, both through individual competition and team competition
❖ To become Region Champions and State Champions
❖ To qualify more athletes for the BYU Invitational and the Utah State Track & Field Championships
❖ To define ourselves and our team through hard work and determination
❖ To learn something about ourselves and our abilities
❖ Most of all to have fun
Our Ways of Achieving These Goals:
- Athletic participation is a privilege that should not be taken for granted. Student-Athletes willingly join a team and regular attendance is an important indicator of their commitment to his/her sport and the overall success of their team and the athletic program. Track and field is a sport and we compete as a team, it is not a “recreation” or “part-time” sport.
- Practices will be from 3:10PM to 5:00PM Monday – Friday. Please come with proper equipment, and be prepared to workout. We will practice rain, snow or shine; therefore, we will be outside 98% of the time, so please dress appropriately for the weather.
- Student-Athletes are required to attend all practices/competitions and stay through completion (unless otherwise specified by the coaching staff). Daily attendance for practices/contests will be taken. Attendance at practice means completing the entire workout, including warm-up and cool down, as assigned by your event coach. Leaving early and not completing the workout is considered an absence. Athletes that accrue four (4) absences, or six (6) tardies within the season shall be removed from the team. An absence is anytime an athlete misses practice or a meet. A trady is anytime an athlete arrives to practice after 3:10PM. A student-athlete that has been removed from the team has 48 hours (or two school days, whichever is greater) to appeal the removal to the Athletic Director's Office in writing.
Excused Absences / Tardies (will not count towards the season total):
- Making up a test and/or receiving additional academic instruction. (The athlete must have their teacher sign a note stating the excused rationale and the athlete shall bring the note to practice that day. Athletes shall make every attempt to receive additional instruction or make up work outside of practice times).
- Attending an academic sanctioned region, state or national competition (band, choir, orchestra, theater and CTSO’s).
- Medical or dental appointments which cannot be scheduled outside school/practice hours (an email from a parent/guardian must be sent prior to the coach notifying them of the appointment).
- Emergency absences approved by the school’s administration.
- Funeral attendance or bereavement.
Consequences - Absence(s)
- Each offense - Athlete shall sit out of the next upcoming contest.
Consequences - Tardies
- 1st – 3rd offense - The coach may remediate the student-athlete at their discretion based on the severity & rationale of the tardy.
- 4th -5th offense - Athlete shall sit out of the next upcoming contest.
- 6th offense - Athlete shall be removed from the athletic team.
- Athletes may receive an additional consequence for tardiness 20 minutes or greater. While a student athlete may not participate in contests due to certain tardy/absence violations, they are expected to participate in practices.
Academic/School/Club/Work Absence(s)
- Non-spring sports, private lessons of any type, dances and/or work-related absences are not excuses to miss practices or meets, you will need to make other arrangements.
- Joining the track team and participating on a club sport team at the same time will not be allowed, you will need to choose one or the other.
- There are also many additional academic extracurricular activities that happen during the springtime. If you choose to join multiple activities and track, there may become a time when you will need to choose which activity is more important. Having excessive absences due to academic related activities is unfair to the student-athletes that are at practice every day.
School/Holiday Breaks
- Holiday and other breaks from school often occur during an athletic season and may conflict with athletic practices and competitions. Athletes are expected to attend practices/contests during holiday and other breaks as family trips/vacations scheduled over breaks are NOT excused absences. Parents/guardians should do everything in their power to avoid scheduling trips that require their child to miss athletics. Despite best intentions to avoid a child being absent from athletics, should the need arise for a parent/guardian to have their child miss athletics the absence must be approved by the school’s administration.
Meet Rules:
- All track athletes must meet either a Varsity or JV qualifying mark to be able to travel to a meet. Coaches reserve the right to invite athletes to participate in a meet even though an athlete may not have made a qualifying mark.
- You are not allowed to pull yourself out of an assigned event. Nothing will cause resentment, bitterness, and bad feelings from your teammates more than leaving three teammates on the starting line during a relay event, for example.
- You cannot leave a meet before the completion of the final event. We compete as a team and everyone needs to be there to cheer on all their teammates. Parents will not be allowed to sign their athlete(s) out until the end of the meet unless you have received prior approval from the coaching staff.
- The athlete is responsible to pay any hotel fees for any meets where the athlete will be staying overnight. No athletes will be permitted to be in a hotel room of the opposite sex at any time. If they are found to be alone with a member of the opposite sex in a hotel room, they will be automatically excluded from participating in the scheduled meet/event the next day and their parents will be notified to come and pick them up. Each athlete is to be in their assigned rooms during room checks. After room checks are done each night, no athlete is to leave their room without the permission of a coach for any reason.
- After each meet, results for each athlete will be posted on www.athletic.net.
Academic Eligibility:
- Academics should be your number one priority – that is what school is all about. As a member of the team, however, you have agreed to complete your studies in the evening and weekends – not during practice time. You can accomplish both goals by organizing yourself.
- In order to be eligible to compete on any team at Cedar High School, you must maintain certain academic standards (2.0 GPA with no more than one F). If you are having academic problems in any class, let the coaching staff know as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made to assist you in improving your grades. Don’t wait until the grade checks to let the coaching staff know that you are having an academic problem. By that time, it may be too late to maintain your athletic eligibility.
- The day of or traveling day of a meet, you may not miss a class period or the full day of school without getting prior approval by the school administration.
- All injuries must be reported to the coaching staff and will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. If it is serious enough, you will be asked to go see the school’s athletic trainer, and then you may be expected to see your family physician or a sports medicine physician, which the trainer will refer you to.
- If you are injured, you are still required to come to practice. You must first come to roll call, warm up and team meeting; then you will be informed of the course of action that you will need to take.
Behavior:
- Each athlete is expected to follow the stipulations of the Cedar High School Athletic Code. You have agreed to a contract to enjoy the privilege of the athletic competition. Honor your commitment to yourself and your team.
- Any alcohol or drug use will not be tolerated. You will be automatically dismissed from the team if you are found to be in possession of/supplying to others/or have been involved in using any illegal or intoxicating substance.
- If you are suspected of drug or alcohol use you will not be permitted to participate with the track team until you and your parents have met with the track coaches and, if necessary, with the school’s administration, and have been approved to return.
- No disruptive behavior will be tolerated at meets, practices, or in the classroom. No one person is above the team. Fighting, “trash talking” to teammates or opponents, mouthing off, using foul and abusive language, refusing to do the workouts, leaving meets early, or showing disrespect for any adult, coach, members of an opposing team, or your fellow team members will not be tolerated. Everybody on the team is important, and each athlete deserves your respect and encouragement. If any of the above become a problem, you will receive one warning and after that will be removed from the team.
Uniform Rules:
- You must wear the complete Cedar High School track uniform at all meets, which includes the singlet and shorts. Uniform singlets will be issued to you; shorts must be purchased through the team online store. If you choose to wear undergarments (spandex, compression shorts, etc.) under your shorts and singlet, they need to be solid black in color.
- You are responsible for any uniform/equipment assigned to you or purchased by you. Do not wear any part of your uniform to practice or P.E. If you lose your singlet or it is stolen, you must reimburse the Cedar High School Track & Field program $50.
Lettering Requirements:
- To receive a Varsity letter in Track & Field, you must score points in a region Invitational meet. Any athlete who qualifies for the State meet will be eligible for a Varsity letter. If you do not finish the entire season (injuries excluded), you will not be eligible for a Varsity letter.
Mini Meet:
- This meet is for athletes to show off what they can do – a form of tryouts and participation at this meet is mandatory. From here we will be able to determine Varsity and JV positions. We will divide all athletes into five teams. Each team will have at least two to three athletes who will compete in each of the 13 individual events. The teams will compete against each other for the title of best mini team.
The Cedar Invitational Meet and Cedar JV Meet:
- Cedar High will be hosting two meets this year and will be in need of volunteers. If you would like to help with our track meets, we would love to have you involved. No experience is necessary; we will provide on-the-job training.
- The Cedar JV Meet is for all athletes that have met the minimum standard but not competed in a Varsity meet. All Varsity athletes are required to attend and help.
- The Cedar Invitational is a varsity meet that we host. This year it will be a one-day meet on Saturday, April 30th. All JV athletes are required to attend and help.
Team Qualifying Standards:
State Qualifying Standard
- Athletes that achieve this standard will have the opportunity to represent Cedar High at the State Meet.
- Athletes that achieve this standard have qualified for a spot to represent Cedar High at the BYU Invitational. For this meet, each team has a limit of 25 participation spots (NOT participants) per gender, regardless of how many athletes have “qualified” by standard. So even if an athlete meets qualifying standards for their event(s), the coaches ultimately will make the final decision of who will fill the 25 participation spots.
- Athletes that achieve this standard will be given first priority at representing Cedar High at the Varsity level.
- By achieving this standard, you will be expected to compete in all the Varsity meets.
- By achieving this standard, you will have the first opportunity for relays.
- Athletes that achieve this standard will be given first priority at representing Cedar High at the JV level.
- By achieving this standard, you will have the opportunity to travel to JV meets.
- An athlete that does not achieve a mark in the event of their choice will NOT be cut from the team. The coaching staff will help guide athletes to events in which they might see potential.
